Fastmail Pty Ltd was founded in 1999 in Melbourne, Australia, to provide professional email for small businesses and experienced email users. Opera Software acquired the company in 2010, and Fastmail staff bought it back in 2013. Fastmail has described itself as independent; its current ownership details have not been confirmed in the sources reviewed.

The company is best known for paid, ad-free email hosting, with support for custom domains and integrated calendars and contacts. It also offers masked email addresses and its own web and mobile apps. Pobox, which Fastmail acquired, was merged into Fastmail in November 2024.

Personal and family email

Personal and family plans combine email with calendars, contacts, file storage, aliases and Masked Email. They are aimed at people who want an email service for everyday or personal use, including with a custom domain.

Business email

Business plans provide custom-domain email, shared addresses, calendars and contacts, along with account administration. They are designed for organisations that need to manage email accounts for a team.

Topicbox group email

Topicbox is a separate group-email and mailing-list service. It offers searchable archives for teams that need to keep and find messages shared with a group.

Domain registration

Fastmail offers domain registration to eligible customers, with setup for using the domain with Fastmail email. Domain registration is an optional service, rather than a requirement for using an existing domain.

Servers, data regions and support

Fastmail identifies server locations in Philadelphia and St. Louis in the United States, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Customers can select the EU as their primary data region, but Fastmail says a resilient copy of EU-region data is also kept in the US.

Support is available by email and an online form. Fastmail says its team operates around the clock except on holidays and aims to send a first response within 24 hours. It does not provide customer-service phone support.
