Why put your VPS in Europe?
For a site, shop or application serving people in the EU or UK, a nearby server can reduce the time each request spends travelling across the network. That can help pages feel more responsive and reduce delay for interactive services. It is most useful when your visitors and application server exchange data frequently; a small brochure site may see little practical difference if latency is not its bottleneck.
Distance matters, but geography alone does not determine a route. In one third-party proxy measurement, Frankfurt to Amsterdam had a round-trip time (RTT) of about 5.9 milliseconds, compared with about 74 ms from Frankfurt to New York. These figures illustrate the potential benefit of a nearby region; they are not a speed promise for any plan in the table. Routing, congestion, the visitor’s internet provider and the server’s own configuration all affect results.
A European location can also make it easier to keep stored personal data within the EEA, which is relevant to data-protection planning. It does not settle every legal or security question. Treat location as one requirement to verify alongside the provider’s terms and the way you run your service.
Choose the country by measuring your audience
Do not choose the Netherlands, Germany or another country just because it sounds central. Start with analytics, customer locations or the cities where your players and staff connect from. Then test RTT from those places to the candidate locations, ideally at more than one time of day. WonderNetwork’s Global Ping Statistics averages 30 pings per city pair and can help you compare city-to-city baselines; your own tests are better for checking the route to a particular service.
For a game server or voice application, small latency differences may matter more than they do for a content-heavy website, where a CDN can serve files closer to users. For a US-focused audience, a European VPS is usually a poor latency fit unless you have a specific operational reason to keep the application in Europe. A US location or CDN may serve those visitors better.
The Europe filter shows plans with servers in Europe, but it does not identify a country or city for every plan. Check each plan’s details or ask the provider to confirm the actual data-centre location and whether you can change it later. The Netherlands and Europe are separate location choices on some of our managed and cPanel comparisons: a country-specific choice is narrower than a regional one. Our company address in Nijmegen is not evidence that a listed server is in the Netherlands.
What a European location changes under GDPR
Keeping personal data stored in the EU or EEA can avoid the GDPR Chapter V transfer question for that storage location. That is useful, but it does not make your website or service GDPR-compliant by itself. Your obligations depend on what personal data you collect, why you process it, who can access it, how long you retain it and what safeguards you use.
Before ordering, read the provider’s data processing agreement (DPA) and check that it describes the provider’s role, processing instructions, security measures and use of subprocessors. Also establish where backups, logs and support access are handled. A server may be in the EU while another part of the service involves access or disclosure outside it. Transfers to a third country must meet the GDPR’s Chapter V conditions, so get advice for your specific setup if those details affect your compliance obligations.
Ask for concrete information rather than relying on a general claim about data protection. Look for the applicable security documentation, incident-notification terms, deletion process and support response commitments. You remain responsible for configuring your application safely, limiting account access and deciding what data belongs on the VPS.
Data sovereignty includes provider ownership
A server’s country and the provider’s ownership are different questions. A European data centre does not guarantee that data is beyond the reach of every non-European law. Under the US CLOUD Act, a US-based provider may be required to produce data in its possession, custody or control regardless of where it is stored. Whether a particular provider can access particular data depends on its relationship to the service and the facts of a request.
If your policy requires avoiding possible non-EU legal reach, check the provider’s ownership, its control over the infrastructure and data, and the terms that govern government requests. A European-owned company may still use other companies as subprocessors, so examine the full chain rather than just the brand name. For data held by a US-owned provider, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework may be relevant to transfers to participating companies; it does not turn server location into a blanket legal guarantee.
Peering helps routes, but does not certify a VPS
Internet exchanges let networks exchange traffic directly rather than sending it through longer routes. AMS-IX in Amsterdam and DE-CIX in Frankfurt are major European exchanges. AMS-IX reported a peak of 15 Tbit/s on 15 April 2026 and 902 connected parties in February 2026. DE-CIX Frankfurt reported 48 exabytes of traffic in 2025. Those figures show the scale of the wider internet infrastructure, not the connection quality of a particular VPS.
Do not assume a plan connects to either exchange because its location is labelled Europe, or infer uptime or speed from an exchange’s traffic record. Ask the provider about its network, upstreams, peering and service-level commitments if routing is important to your work. For a practical check, test from the cities your users actually occupy and repeat the test during busy periods.
Match the plan to the workload
The table is filtered to show VPS plans with European servers. It offers filters for disk, traffic, memory, management and control panel, plus root access and NVMe requirements. Across all 116 plans from 17 providers in our full VPS comparison, prices start at $2.09; those figures describe the full comparison, not just this Europe filter. Prices were last synced on 31 October 2026.
Use the resource filters to set a sensible shortlist, then check what each plan’s labels mean in practice. For example, an unlimited traffic allowance may still have fair-use conditions or other network limits. NVMe storage can be useful for workloads with frequent disk reads and writes, while RAM needs depend on the application and its peak load. Choose managed support if you want the provider to take on more server administration; with a self-managed VPS, plan for patching, monitoring and recovery yourself.
- Confirm the country and, if it matters, the city of the server before paying.
- Read the DPA, security terms, subprocessors list and process for responding to legal requests.
- Check where backups and logs are stored, how long they are retained and how you can restore them.
- Review traffic limits, fair-use wording, support hours, management scope and renewal terms.
- Test latency from real user locations, and compare the cost over the period you expect to keep the VPS.
A European VPS is a strong starting point when your users, data-handling requirements and operational needs point to Europe. If latency is not a concern for your small site, compare support, backups and terms as carefully as the map. For regulated or sensitive workloads, confirm both the precise server location and the provider’s legal and technical arrangements before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Does a VPS in Europe make my site GDPR-compliant?
No. A European server can help keep stored data within the EU or EEA, but compliance depends on what you process and how. Check the provider’s data processing agreement, security measures, subprocessors, backup locations and support access. You also need suitable practices in your own application. If data may be accessed or disclosed outside the EU, assess whether GDPR transfer rules apply.
Which European country is best for latency to my visitors?
Choose based on where your visitors are and the routes available, not on a country’s reputation for being central. Test RTT from the cities that matter to you and compare candidate locations at different times. A game or voice service may be more sensitive to small differences than a site that uses a CDN. Confirm the plan’s actual country before ordering.
What is AMS-IX and does it matter for hosting?
AMS-IX is an internet exchange in Amsterdam where networks exchange traffic. Its scale can be relevant to the wider network ecosystem, but it does not prove that a particular VPS provider connects there or that its service will be fast. Ask the provider about its peering and routes, then test from your users’ locations rather than relying on exchange traffic records.
What is the difference between the Netherlands and Europe filter on Hostcomplex?
A Netherlands filter is country-specific; Europe is a regional filter that can include servers in other European countries. The Europe VPS table shows plans with European data centres, but it does not name a country for every plan. Check the individual plan details or ask the provider to confirm the server location if a particular country is required.
Can a European data centre still be subject to US law?
Potentially. The US CLOUD Act can apply to a US-based provider’s data in its possession, custody or control even when that data is stored abroad. Check who owns and controls the provider, along with its subprocessors and legal-request terms. A European server location alone does not guarantee protection from foreign legal requests.
How long does a round trip take between Frankfurt and Amsterdam?
One third-party proxy measurement recorded about 5.9 ms RTT between Frankfurt and Amsterdam. That is an example, not a guarantee for a VPS or every network route. Actual results vary with routing, congestion and the networks involved. Test from your own users’ locations and, for a specific plan, from the service once you can access it.
