How we compare web hosting

A comparison is only useful if you know how it is made. This page explains where our data comes from, how we rank plans and how we earn money.

Where the data comes from

Prices and specifications of 6 providers come directly from the providers and their partner programmes. We import this data automatically. Every comparison shows when the prices were last checked.

The real cost, renewals included

Many hosts advertise a low intro price that only applies for the first months or years. That is why we calculate the average monthly cost over 36 months: the intro price for the intro period, then the regular renewal price. You see both prices and the average next to each other.

Prices in your currency

Providers charge in euros or US dollars. We show prices in the currency of your language version and convert with the daily reference rates of the European Central Bank. Converted prices are marked with ≈; the amount you pay is set by the provider.

The Hostcomplex score

Every provider and plan gets a score from 0 to 10, made up of four parts. Price & features (40%): the average monthly cost over 36 months, the price per GB of storage, the price per website and the included features and guarantees, compared with the other plans in the same category. The most favourable plan scores 10, the least favourable 2. Online reputation (30%): the scores on independent review platforms such as Trustpilot, weighted by the number of reviews; we show every source with its date. Reviews on Hostcomplex (20%): the average of the verified reviews by our visitors, which counts fully from 10 reviews. Editorial rating (10%): only when one of our editors reviewed the provider.

Missing data

When a part has no data yet, it is left out and the other parts count proportionally more. A provider is never marked down because nobody has reviewed it yet. Every review page shows how its score is built up.

Reviews by visitors

Anyone can review a provider on performance, support, value for money and ease of use. A review is only published after the reviewer confirmed their email address, and we use bot protection against spam. Email addresses and websites of reviewers are never published. Providers cannot remove reviews; we only remove reviews that break the law or are clearly not about the provider.

Ranking

The default "recommended" order sorts by the Hostcomplex score and then by the lowest real cost. You can always sort by intro price, cost over time, storage or number of websites yourself.

How we earn money

Hostcomplex is free to use. When you buy hosting through a link on our site, we may receive a commission from the provider. That costs you nothing extra. Commissions never decide which plans we show or in which order: providers without a partner programme are compared in the same way.

Who is behind Hostcomplex

Hostcomplex is published by XHOSTING, a web hosting company based in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Our editors work in the hosting industry every day and use that experience to explain plans, prices and features clearly. We keep our comparisons independent: the order of the plans is never for sale.
