Proton Drive plans and who they suit
Drive Plus is the standalone paid tier for one person who wants more space than the free plan and longer file-version recovery. In our comparison, it includes 200 GB. It is the simplest fit if your main need is extra personal storage.
Unlimited adds other Proton services, including VPN, alongside 500 GB of storage for one person. Duo is designed for two people sharing a plan and includes 2 TB; Family extends the bundle to a household of up to six, with 3 TB. Drive Professional is the business option, with 1 TB listed and administration controls for managing users and access. The free tier provides basic Drive access.
What stands out about Proton online storage
Proton says files are encrypted end to end before upload, in transit and at rest, using zero-access encryption so it cannot decrypt their contents. It also says filenames, folder names and thumbnail previews are end-to-end encrypted, although some operational metadata remains available to Proton. Shared links can be password-protected, given an expiry and revoked.
Proton says Drive servers are in Switzerland, Germany or Norway, and that Swiss jurisdiction applies. It does not confirm which country holds a particular customer’s files or offer a customer-selected storage region. Proton operates the infrastructure; customers manage files and accounts, with organization-level user controls available on Drive Professional.
Drive has a web app, Windows and macOS desktop sync, and Android and iOS apps with automatic photo backup. Linux users can use the web app and command-line interface, but Proton’s roadmap describes its official Linux desktop app as still in development. Paid plans offer configurable file-version history and restore; deleted files remain in Trash until permanently deleted. Proton Docs and Sheets support online editing and collaboration, including with people without Proton accounts. Proton says it keeps encrypted offline backups periodically for a limited time, but does not publish a fixed schedule.
These features make Drive a strong privacy-focused choice, but it may not suit everyone: a native Linux sync app is not confirmed as released, and public user reports include some complaints about slow transfers, sync errors and file conflicts. Those reports do not establish how common the issues are.
Prices, billing and renewals
Proton offers recurring billing periods, and subscriptions renew automatically for the selected term unless canceled or changed. The renewal uses the price in effect at that time, which may differ from the initial purchase price. The available information does not confirm a fixed introductory-price or longer-term discount pattern, so treat any current deal shown on this page separately from the renewal terms.
Eligible purchases made directly from Proton have an initial refund window, subject to exclusions in its terms; third-party purchases follow the intermediary’s policy. Cancellation stops renewal, while the paid plan remains active until the current billing period ends.
How Proton compares with other storage providers
Choose Infomaniak if confirmed storage and processing in Switzerland across multiple data centres is a priority. STRATO is an alternative for hosted cloud storage with data stated to be held in EU data centres. For storage where you can select a primary region from a broad set of Azure locations, consider Microsoft. See our online storage comparison for more providers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Proton Drive managed cloud storage or server hosting?
It is a provider-operated cloud service, not customer-managed server hosting. Proton operates the infrastructure, while customers manage files and accounts; Drive Professional adds business controls for users and access.
Which Proton Drive plan should I choose?
Drive Plus is the standalone choice for one person who needs extra storage. Unlimited adds other Proton services, Duo is aimed at two people, Family at a household, and Drive Professional at business storage and collaboration.
Where are Proton Drive files stored?
Proton says its Drive servers are in Switzerland, Germany or Norway and that Swiss jurisdiction applies. It does not confirm the server country assigned to an individual account or let customers select a storage region.
Can I upgrade or restore deleted files?
Drive offers paid plans with longer, configurable file-version history and restore, and deleted files stay in Trash until permanently deleted. Proton also offers different plans, but check the account’s storage use when changing tiers because a lower plan may not support usage above its limits.
How do Proton Drive renewals work?
Subscriptions renew automatically for the selected billing term unless canceled or changed, at the price in effect at renewal. Canceling stops the next renewal, but the paid plan stays active through the current billing period.
