Largest web hosts in Europe

Detailed view of a server rack with a focus on technology and data storage.

There is no single largest web hosting company in Europe: the leader differs from country to country. Measured by share of websites on each national domain extension, team.blue is the largest host in 10 of the 28 European countries covered here, United Internet (IONOS, STRATO and sister brands) leads in Germany with 23.4% and also in Austria, Spain and the UK, and OVHcloud leads in France with 32.3%. All figures come from W3Techs, data of 6 November 2026.

Market concentration varies widely. Zone Media hosts 51.1% of all .ee websites in Estonia, while the largest hosting company in the UK, Latvia and Ireland holds less than 9% of its country's domain.

Largest web hosting company in each European country

The table shows, for each country, the hosting company (counted as a group with all its brands) that hosts the largest share of websites using that country's top-level domain, plus the company in second place. Countries are listed with the largest markets first.

Source: W3Techs, distribution of web hosting providers among websites that use each country-code top-level domain, data of 6 November 2026. Share = percentage of all websites on that domain extension in the W3Techs sample. * In the UK, website builders Shopify (7.8%) and Wix (7.1%) rank above United Internet but are excluded as SaaS-only platforms; W3Techs publishes only the top three per domain, so the second-largest hosting company in the UK is not visible. In Latvia, Amazon (6.7%) is excluded as a hyperscale cloud. See How this overview was made for all exclusions.

Largest hosting groups across Europe

A single Europe-wide market share does not exist in the W3Techs data, so the groups below are ranked on what the same 28 country pages do measure: the number of countries in which a group is the largest hosting company, then the number of countries in which it reaches the W3Techs top three. The worldwide share from the W3Techs overview of the same date is added for context only.

"Top three" counts the top three as W3Techs publishes them, including places taken by excluded platforms. Groups that lead only their home market, such as Aruba Group in Italy and Infomaniak in Switzerland, are profiled below but not ranked here. On the pan-European .eu domain, team.blue also leads with 7.7%, ahead of United Internet (5.1%) and Hetzner (4.8%).

The leading European hosting groups in detail

team.blue: largest in 10 countries

team.blue is headquartered in Ghent, Belgium. Investment firm Hg has backed the group since 2019, and in July 2024 the company stated that Hg would remain its largest single investor after a minority investment by Sofina. The group describes itself as a digital partner for small and medium-sized businesses in 23 countries, and its own press material speaks of more than 3.5 million customers and more than 60 brands. These are company-reported figures.

team.blue rarely sells under its own name. According to W3Techs, the largest of its brands by websites hosted are Combell (15.5% of team.blue's sites), WebSupport (10.2%), Natro (7.6%), SuperHosting.BG (6.1%), TransIP (5.6%), Webempresa (5.3%) and Webnode (5.1%), followed by Vimexx, Signet, Shoptet, Simply.com, Loopia and Register.it. The brand list matches the map: team.blue leads in Slovakia (42.4%), home of WebSupport, in Bulgaria (40.9%), home of SuperHosting.BG, in Denmark (34.1%), where its brands include Simply.com, Curanet and DanDomain, and in Portugal (29.6%), where it owns PTisp and Dominios.pt. It is not in the top three in Germany, France, Spain, Italy or the UK.

United Internet (IONOS, STRATO and others): largest in Germany

United Internet's hosting business is IONOS Group SE, based in Montabaur, Germany, in which United Internet AG held 63.8% of the shares on 31 March 2026. IONOS reported revenue of €1,316.9 million and about 6.63 million customers for fiscal year 2025 (company-reported, published 19 March 2026). Within the W3Techs group, IONOS accounts for 65.5% of the sites, STRATO for 17.8%, home.pl 6.2%, Arsys 5.0%, World4You 2.8% and Fasthosts 1.2%.

With 23.4% of all .de websites, United Internet holds the largest share of any company in a large European market. Its other leads come with local brands in its portfolio: IONOS, Arsys and Piensa Solutions in Spain (15.7%), IONOS and World4You in Austria (13.5%) and IONOS and Fasthosts in the UK (6.4%). In Poland, where home.pl belongs to the group, it is second with 8.6%. More detail on the German market is in our analysis of the largest web hosting companies in Germany.

OVHcloud: largest in France and Luxembourg

OVHcloud (OVH Groupe) was founded in 1999 by Octave Klaba, is based in Roubaix, France, and has been listed on Euronext Paris since October 2021. For the fiscal year ended 31 August 2026 it reported revenue of €1,145.1 million, 46 data centres and 1.7 million customers in more than 140 countries (company-reported, 20 October 2026). OVHcloud sells shared hosting alongside dedicated servers and public cloud.

Its 32.3% share of .fr websites is one of the highest national shares in this overview. Outside France it leads in Luxembourg (13.7%) and is second in Belgium (10.8%) and Spain (6.7%). Because W3Techs attributes a website to the company that operates the server, OVHcloud's share includes sites that agencies and resellers run on its servers, not only its own hosting customers.

Hetzner: in the top three of nine countries

Hetzner was founded in 1997 and is based in Gunzenhausen, Germany. It operates data centre parks in Nuremberg and Falkenstein (Germany) and Helsinki (Finland) and has expanded to the USA and Singapore. Hetzner does not publish customer numbers on its company page.

Hetzner leads in Greece (22.7%) and is second in Croatia (15.0%), Austria (11.7%) and Germany (10.8%). Its presence in nine national top threes, from Portugal to Estonia, reflects its role as an infrastructure provider: much of its share consists of websites that developers, agencies and smaller hosts place on its dedicated and cloud servers.

Group.one: in the top three of nine countries

Group.one is the result of the 2023 combination of group.ONE and dogado group, financed by Cinven, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and the founders and management. Its registered address is in Malmö, Sweden. On its website the group reports more than 2 million customers, 20 local brands and pro forma revenue of €350 million (company-reported, undated).

W3Techs counts One.com (38.6% of the group's sites), Webglobe (13.2%), Dogado (9.5%), Metanet (8.9%), Alfahosting (7.7%) and Antagonist (6.3%) as its largest brands, together with Easyname, Profihost, Hostnet and checkdomain. Group.one leads in Norway (11.9%) and holds second or third place in Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Your.Online: second in France and the Netherlands

Your.Online, formerly Total Webhosting Solutions, is headquartered in the Netherlands according to W3Techs. On its website it reports 36 brands, more than 1.3 million customers and more than 1,000 colleagues, and says it is part of Your.World, backed by Strikwerda Investments (company-reported, undated).

In the W3Techs grouping, o2switch accounts for 43.3% of the group's sites, followed by Yourhosting (8.1%), Gandi (7.9%), Axarnet (6.3%) and Loading (6.1%). This makes Your.Online the second-largest host in France (10.5%) and in the Netherlands (7.4%). Your.Online's own brand list also includes Blacknight and Zone, which W3Techs counts as separate companies; see the methodology. The Dutch market is covered in our article on the largest web hosting companies in the Netherlands.

Miss Group: largest in Lithuania

Miss Group was founded in 2014, is headquartered in Stockholm and has grown mainly through acquisitions; investment firm Perwyn invested in February 2020. On its website the group describes itself as home to more than 30 brands and lists 800,000 customer accounts and more than 350 employees (company-reported, undated).

Its largest brand in the W3Techs data is Interneto Vizija (29.2% of the group's sites), which gives Miss Group 37.1% of .lt websites. ProfesionalHosting, Sered, Hoststar, Domeneshop, Seravo and Web4U are other brands. Miss Group is also second in Norway (8.8%) and third in Finland (7.6%).

Cyber_Folks Group: largest in Poland

Cyber_Folks (formerly R22) is a Polish group listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Its business today extends well beyond hosting into e-commerce software (Shoper) and messaging (Vercom); the company reports 700,000 clients across Europe and group revenue of PLN 855 million for 2025, a figure that includes its e-commerce and messaging businesses (company-reported).

In hosting, W3Techs attributes 80.8% of the group's sites to the cyber_Folks brand, followed by Zenbox, H88 Web Hosting and Avalon. The group leads in Poland with 18.6%, is second in Romania (12.5%) and third in Croatia (6.7%).

Aruba Group: largest in Italy

Aruba S.p.A. was founded in 1994 and is based in Ponte San Pietro near Bergamo. It offers hosting, domains, certified e-mail (PEC) and cloud services. W3Techs groups Aruba (92.0% of the group's sites) with the Forpsi brand (8.0%).

Aruba hosts 28.0% of all .it websites, more than four times the share of the runner-up Serverplan (6.6%). It does not appear in the top three of any other country covered here.

Infomaniak: largest in Switzerland

Infomaniak was founded in Geneva in 1994, has teams in Geneva and Zurich and designs and operates its own data centres in Switzerland. It leads the Swiss market with 12.5% of .ch websites, ahead of Group.one (10.0%) and Hostpoint (9.5%). With three companies within 3 percentage points, Switzerland has one of the closest races among the larger markets.

Other national leaders and runners-up

Several countries are led by companies that W3Techs counts as independent national hosts. The figures below are W3Techs data of 6 November 2026; company details are not covered here.

  • Zone Media hosts 51.1% of .ee websites, the highest share of any leader in this overview.
  • Blacknight leads in Ireland with 8.7%, only 0.5 percentage points ahead of team.blue and SiteGround (8.2% each).
  • DHH leads in Croatia (20.2%) and is second in Slovenia (18.5%), where Neoserv leads with 19.0%.
  • Romarg leads in Romania (14.8%), ahead of Cyber_Folks Group and Claus Web (8.0%).
  • Nano leads in Latvia with 7.2%, the lowest leading share apart from the UK; Amazon and LeaseWeb follow with 6.7% each.
  • National runners-up without a profile here: Vedos (.cz, 12.0%), RackForest (.hu, 9.2%) and Tárhely.eu (7.1%), Serverplan (.it, 6.6%), Delta.bg (.bg, 6.4%), Telia Company Group (.ee, 4.1%), Oderland (.se, 7.4%), Hostpoint (.ch, 9.5%), Hitrost (.si, 8.6%), VNET (.sk, 5.9%), Pointer (.gr, 4.7%) and All-inkl.com (third in .de with 9.4% and in .at with 5.9%).

What the data shows about the European hosting market

A collection of national markets

Europe's hosting market is still organised by country. Fifteen different companies lead the 28 domains, and only three groups lead in more than one. In eight countries the leader hosts more than a quarter of all sites on the national domain (Estonia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Denmark, France, Portugal and Italy). In three, the UK, Latvia and Ireland, no hosting company reaches 9%.

Pan-European groups grow by buying local brands

The groups with the widest reach (team.blue, Group.one, Your.Online and Miss Group) are built from acquired national hosts that keep their own names. Customers of WebSupport in Slovakia, Simply.com in Denmark or TransIP in the Netherlands are team.blue customers without seeing that name. team.blue, Group.one and Miss Group are backed by private equity or pension investors; United Internet/IONOS, OVHcloud and Cyber_Folks are listed companies; Hetzner, Aruba and Infomaniak operate mainly under a single brand rather than a portfolio of acquired hosts.

Home markets remain the strongest

The two largest European hosts by worldwide share are strongest at home. United Internet holds 23.4% in Germany but between 5.9% and 15.7% in the other countries where it ranks in the top three. OVHcloud holds 32.3% in France and no more than 13.7% elsewhere. Even team.blue, the widest-reaching group, does not reach the top three in any of the five largest markets by population.

Global leaders are weaker in Europe

Hostinger, the largest hosting company worldwide according to W3Techs with 5.2% of all websites, leads no European country domain. It is in the top three in Lithuania (21.9%), Spain (5.7%) and Portugal (4.3%). SiteGround is third in Italy and Ireland. The large US groups, GoDaddy and Newfold Digital, do not appear in any national top three. Our global ranking of the biggest web hosting companies shows how these positions compare worldwide.

Website builders lead the UK

The UK is the only covered country where SaaS website builders top the list: Shopify (7.8%) and Wix (7.1%) both host more .uk sites than any hosting company. Combined with the low share of the leading host, this makes the UK the most fragmented hosting market in this overview.

What this means for website owners

  • The local brand often belongs to a European group. A host that looks independent may share ownership, infrastructure and policies with brands in other countries. That is relevant when comparing support, data location or terms.
  • Size says nothing about fit. A large share shows that many site owners chose a company, not that its plans suit a given project. Compare features and terms in our overviews of web hosting, WordPress hosting and VPS hosting, and check current offers on the deals page.
  • Infrastructure hosts and managed hosts are different products. Hetzner's and OVHcloud's shares include many sites run on self-managed servers. For a managed shared hosting package, the relevant comparison is with local brands such as IONOS, STRATO, Hostnet or Yourhosting.
  • Market position matters when a host is acquired. Many leading brands have changed owner in recent years. After an acquisition, check whether prices, platform or data centre location change at renewal.

How this overview was made

Source and date. All shares come from W3Techs (Q-Success), which publishes web hosting usage per top-level domain. All 28 country pages, the .eu page, the worldwide overview and the group pages were retrieved on 6 November 2026 and show data of that date. W3Techs updates its figures daily, so later values can differ.

Metric. The share is the percentage of websites in the W3Techs sample that use a given country-code top-level domain and are hosted by a company. "Largest" in this article means this measured share only. It differs from "most popular", which would require customer numbers or usage data measured in the same way for every company, and from "best known", which is about brand awareness and requires survey research that is not available for these markets. Revenue and customer numbers in the profiles are company-reported context with different dates and definitions, and are never used for ranking.

Scope. The overview covers 28 national domains: 25 of the 27 EU member states (Cyprus and Malta are not included), plus the UK, Norway and Switzerland. The pan-European .eu domain is reported separately. A country's domain is a proxy for its market: many European businesses use .com or other generic domains, which W3Techs does not assign to countries, and a .de or .fr site may be owned by a foreign company.

Ranking across Europe. Because W3Techs does not publish a European total, groups are ranked by the number of national domains they lead and the number of national top threes they appear in, with worldwide share used only to separate ties. W3Techs publishes only the top three per domain on its public pages, so lower positions and the second place among hosting companies in the UK are not visible.

Groups and brands. W3Techs counts a group with all the brands it attributes to it, which avoids double counting. Brand shares within a group are W3Techs figures. W3Techs's grouping does not always match current ownership: Your.Online lists Blacknight (Ireland's leader, 8.7%) and Zone among its brands, while W3Techs counts Blacknight and Zone Media (Estonia's leader, 51.1%) as separate companies. This overview follows W3Techs, because combining shares that W3Techs reports separately could double count sites and would mix two methods.

Attribution. W3Techs assigns a website to the company that operates its server. Infrastructure providers such as Hetzner and OVHcloud therefore also receive sites that agencies, developers and resellers run on their servers. W3Techs counts websites, not pages or subdomains, and only includes sites it considers relevant; its sample includes well over 20 million sites.

Exclusions. As in our global ranking, SaaS-only website builders and hyperscale or developer clouds are excluded, because they do not sell conventional hosting for a site the customer controls. Excluded platforms that appear in the country top threes: Shopify (.uk 7.8%, .lt 4.5%), Wix (.uk 7.1%, .lu 6.9%) and Amazon (.lv 6.7%, .no 5.8%). Worldwide shares of excluded platforms on the same date: Shopify 5.4%, Amazon 4.4%, Wix 4.2%, Squarespace 2.4%, Vercel 2.3%, Google 1.8%, Microsoft 0.8%, Webflow 0.8%, Netlify 0.6% and Jimdo 0.3%. Website builders are compared separately in our website builder overview.

Frequently asked questions

Which European web hosting company has the most customers?

Customer numbers are self-reported and defined differently by each company, so they cannot be ranked reliably. As reported: IONOS (United Internet) had about 6.63 million customers at the end of 2025, team.blue speaks of more than 3.5 million customers, Group.one of more than 2 million and OVHcloud of 1.7 million (fiscal year to 31 August 2026). That is why this overview ranks by measured share of websites instead.

Are IONOS, STRATO and 1&1 the same company?

They belong to the same group. IONOS Group SE, based in Montabaur, owns the hosting brands IONOS and STRATO, as well as Arsys, home.pl, World4You and Fasthosts, and is 63.8% owned by United Internet AG (31 March 2026). 1&1 is United Internet's separate telecoms business. W3Techs counts all of these hosting brands together as United Internet.

Which hosting brands belong to team.blue?

According to W3Techs, team.blue's largest brands by websites hosted are Combell, WebSupport, Natro, SuperHosting.BG, TransIP, Webempresa and Webnode, followed by Vimexx, Signet, Shoptet, Simply.com, Loopia, Enartia, Register.it and PTisp. Most of them still trade under their original name, so customers often do not see the team.blue name.

Which European hosting company hosts the most websites worldwide?

Lithuanian-founded Hostinger, with 5.2% of all websites according to W3Techs (data of 6 November 2026). It is followed among European companies by United Internet (2.5%), OVHcloud (2.4%), team.blue (2.3%) and Hetzner (2.1%). Hostinger's worldwide lead contrasts with its position in Europe, where it leads no national domain.

Does a .de or .fr domain mean a website is hosted in Germany or France?

No. The domain extension only says where a site is registered by name, not where its server is. A .fr site can run on a server in Germany, and many European companies use .com instead of their national domain. This overview uses the domain as a proxy for the national market; the physical server location is a separate measurement.
