About Surfshark

Founded in 2018, Surfshark is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It began with a VPN service and expanded into products including Antivirus, Alert, Search and Incogni. Surfshark says it merged with Nord Security under a shared holding company in 2022, while the two businesses continue to operate independently. The holding company’s legal name has not been confirmed in the official sources reviewed.

Surfshark’s product range

VPN

Surfshark VPN encrypts a device’s internet connection and lets users connect through VPN endpoints in different countries. Its Starter, One and One+ bundles include VPN service. Features listed for the VPN include unlimited simultaneous devices, a kill switch, multi-hop connections and support for major desktop, mobile, browser and TV platforms.

Antivirus

Device antivirus protection is included in Surfshark One bundles. It is intended for customers who want malware protection alongside VPN service.

Alert

Alert monitors for exposed personal information and data breaches, then notifies the user. It is aimed at people who want notifications about potential exposure of their details.

Search is a private search tool for users who want to search the web with Surfshark’s privacy-focused product suite.

Alternative ID and Alternative Number

Alternative ID creates an alternative online identity and email. Alternative Number is an add-on that provides a virtual phone number.

Incogni

Incogni is a personal-data removal service included in the One+ bundle. It is for customers seeking help with removing personal information from the internet.

Dedicated IP and Ironwall

Dedicated IP is a VPN add-on that provides a dedicated IP address. Ironwall is a business-focused solution for removing employees’ personal information from the internet.

VPN locations and support

Surfshark lists more than 4,500 VPN servers across 100 countries and more than 130 locations, with city-level choices in some places. These are VPN endpoints, not a published map of data-centre facilities. Some listed locations are virtual, so an IP address’s apparent location may differ from the physical server location. Surfshark has not confirmed the facility operators or addresses.

Surfshark offers support around the clock through live chat and email, but does not provide phone support. Customers use Surfshark apps and software for its services, plus a web account area to manage a subscription; this is not a web-hosting control panel.

Who Surfshark suits

Surfshark may suit individuals or households looking for a VPN, or customers who want VPN service combined with privacy and security tools. Its plans are not suitable for someone looking for website hosting, server rental or a hosting control panel. Businesses seeking employee data removal can consider Ironwall, but the consumer VPN bundles are not web-hosting plans.
