About Google Workspace

Google began as a search-engine project developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford and was incorporated in 1998. Google LLC is based in Mountain View, United States, and is part of Alphabet Inc. The founding year of the Google Workspace brand itself is not confirmed.

Google Workspace is known for bringing Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet and Calendar together in one service. It is business software and cloud storage, rather than conventional web hosting for building and serving a public website.

Google Workspace products

Google Workspace subscriptions

Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus and Enterprise subscriptions combine business productivity and collaboration services. The available features, storage and administration controls depend on the plan. Google also lists Essentials and other organisation-specific editions; availability varies by customer type and region.

Productivity and collaboration applications

Workspace includes applications such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Chat, Calendar, Forms, Sites, Keep and Tasks. These support business email, file storage, document creation, meetings and team coordination. Gemini and other related apps are also listed, with access depending on the offer.

Security and administration

Administrators use the Google Admin console to manage users and services. Security controls differ by plan; Google Vault and endpoint management are among the tools available on eligible plans.

Business add-ons and hardware

Google offers Google Voice as a business telephone add-on, AppSheet for no-code app development and automation, and Google Meet hardware for meeting rooms. AI access options, Chrome Enterprise and Assured Controls are also listed as add-ons or related business offerings.

Infrastructure and support

Google describes its infrastructure as global and distributed. It identifies eight US data-centre locations hosting Workspace services within a specified FedRAMP High boundary, and says eligible customers can configure covered data-at-rest regions for the United States or Europe. This does not mean every customer’s data is stored only in those locations.

Workspace administrators can contact support through the Admin console. Contact options depend on the subscription and may include chat and email; enhanced or 24/7 priority support is plan-specific or paid. A single support schedule for every plan has not been confirmed.

Who should consider Google Workspace?

Google Workspace suits businesses that want email on their own domain alongside shared documents, calendars, meetings and cloud storage. It may also suit teams that already work with Google applications. If you only need traditional website hosting, or want a standalone storage service without the wider business suite, compare providers in those categories instead.
