About VPN.AC
The VPN.AC service is operated by Cryptolayer SRL, formerly Netsec Interactive Solutions SRL. The operator says it is a Romanian IT security company established in 2009, with experience in security audits and penetration testing. It developed the VPN service in-house and launched it in 2012. The company gives its registered address in Sibiu, Romania; no separate parent company or individual owner was confirmed.
VPN.AC is known for a security-focused approach, proprietary apps, support for several VPN protocols and obfuscation options. Its SecureProxy browser extension is another part of the service.
What VPN.AC sells
VPN service
The consumer VPN plan provides apps and connection options for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS; Linux is described as beta. The service also supports third-party VPN clients and manual configurations. Hostcomplex’s comparison lists features including up to 12 simultaneous devices, multi-hop connections, obfuscated servers and support for protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec. It is intended for people who want to encrypt internet connections across devices, including while travelling or using public networks.
SecureProxy browser extension
SecureProxy is an encrypted browser-proxy extension for supported browsers and is included with the VPN service. It offers a separate, broader set of locations from the VPN network. It is a browser-focused option, rather than a replacement for a VPN connection across all apps on a device.
Servers and support
VPN.AC lists locations across Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania. Its published VPN location list includes countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Romania, Japan and Australia. The provider does not identify the physical data-centre operators for each location on its location page.
Technical and billing support is handled through a ticketing system. The provider also lists email and a contact form for other enquiries; support hours and a guaranteed response time were not confirmed. Its apps include connection and IP-leak checks, and customers can use a client area to manage their account.
Who VPN.AC suits
VPN.AC may suit people who want a VPN with multiple protocol choices, manual setup options and a browser proxy bundled into the service. It is also worth considering if configurable security features matter more to you than a large, highly publicised server network.
Look elsewhere if you need web hosting, a free VPN plan, live-chat support or a provider with a clearly confirmed uptime guarantee. Streaming access can vary by service and location, so people choosing a VPN mainly for streaming should check that point before subscribing.
