HostGator

About HostGator

Brent Oxley founded HostGator in 2002 while he was a student at Florida Atlantic University. The company grew into a provider of web hosting and related services, and was acquired by Endurance International Group in 2012. HostGator identifies HostGator LLC as an indirect subsidiary of Newfold Digital, Inc.

HostGator is based in Houston and Austin, Texas, in the United States. It is known for its range of hosting products, as well as domain registration and related services.

HostGator's hosting and website services

Shared hosting

Linux and Windows shared hosting put multiple websites on a server. It can suit personal sites, small business websites and projects that do not need dedicated server resources. Hostcomplex's comparison lists shared plans with cPanel, SSL, backups and one-click WordPress installation.

WordPress hosting

HostGator offers hosting optimized for WordPress, for customers who want a hosting option tailored to the content management system.

Reseller hosting

Linux reseller hosting is intended for people or businesses that want to manage hosting for their own clients. HostGator documents WHM tools for reseller administration.

VPS hosting

Virtual private servers provide a separate server environment, with root access on the VPS plans listed in our comparison. These self-managed options suit users who want more control than shared hosting provides.

Dedicated hosting

HostGator sells Linux and Windows dedicated servers, which allocate a physical server to one customer.

E-commerce hosting

E-commerce hosting is listed among HostGator's products for customers creating an online shop.

Domains and other website services

HostGator offers domain registration and transfers, SSL certificates, professional email and Google Workspace, and website security products. It also lists CMS and module installers, website-content transfers, web design, PPC and SEO services. Its legacy Website Builder is no longer available to new signups.

Servers and support

HostGator says most of its servers are in Provo, Utah, and Atlanta, Georgia, with some in other locations it does not specify. Customers cannot choose their data centre. The company advertises live chat and phone support around the clock, as well as a knowledge base and tutorials.

Who should consider HostGator?

HostGator may suit site owners who want to choose between shared hosting, WordPress, reseller services and more configurable server options from one provider. Its shared plans can be a starting point for smaller sites, while VPS and dedicated hosting offer alternatives as requirements change.

Look elsewhere if choosing a particular data-centre location is essential, or if you need infrastructure suitable for HIPAA-regulated health information. Compare plan details carefully if you need a managed server: the VPS plans listed in our comparison are self-managed.
