What Is Web Hosting
What a Hosting Provider Actually Supplies
What is web hosting? It is a service that stores the files of a website on a server connected to the internet, so visitors can load the site at any time.
The server is the key part. It is a computer, or a dedicated share of one, that runs continuously and answers requests from web browsers. When you buy a hosting plan, you pay for three things: a share of the server's storage, a network connection fast enough to serve your visitors, and the ongoing work of keeping the machine running. That work includes software updates, security patches and hardware replacement.
Most of this happens out of sight. Servers usually sit in a data center, a building designed for constant power, cooling and fast network links. A small site does not need its own machine in an office to be reachable.
Consider a local bakery with a menu, photos and an hours page. The owner uploads the files once. From then on, the host keeps them online day and night, and the bakery never has to manage a computer. To see the main plan categories a host offers, read about the types of web hosting.
How a Visitor's Request Reaches a Hosted Site
When someone types a web address into a browser, several steps happen before a page appears. Knowing those steps shows where hosting fits in.
- Name lookup. The browser asks the domain name system (DNS), a directory that links names to numeric addresses, which address belongs to the domain.
- Request. The browser sends a request to that address using HTTP, the protocol that web traffic runs on.
- Response. Web server software on the host receives the request, finds the page's files, runs any code or database queries the page needs, and sends the result back.
- Display. The browser builds the page from what it received and shows it to the visitor.
The domain name has to point to the host's address, which is set in DNS records. Hosts often handle that part for you, but it remains a separate service that can be managed elsewhere. Hosting covers the response step and everything around it: a server ready to answer, software that answers correctly, and enough capacity that many visitors at once do not slow it down. Frequently asked questions
Does web hosting include a domain name?
Not as part of the hosting itself. A domain name is a registered address, while hosting stores and serves your files. Many providers sell both together as a bundle, but they are separate services and can come from different companies. The domain only needs to point to the host's address to show your site. The difference is explained in domain vs hosting.
Do I need a separate web host if I use a website builder?
Usually not. Most hosted website builders include hosting in their subscription, so the builder company runs the server for you. You need to choose a host yourself when you build a site with your own code or install software such as WordPress on your own hosting account.
