What Is Golang?

Maarten Soetens 2 min read

What the Go Language Is

Golang, usually called Go, is an open-source programming language created at Google and released publicly in 2009. It is statically typed, meaning variable types are checked before the program runs, and compiled, meaning the source code is translated into machine code ahead of time. The name Golang comes from the website address golang.org, while the language itself is named Go.

Go is designed for simplicity. It has a small set of language features, a standard code formatter and a large standard library that includes an HTTP server and client. Many web services can therefore be built without third-party frameworks.

Features That Matter for Web Services

  • Compiled binaries: in most cases a Go program compiles into a single executable that includes its dependencies and the Go runtime, so the server does not need a separate language installation.
  • Goroutines: lightweight functions that run concurrently, scheduled by the Go runtime. They allow one program to handle many simultaneous connections.
  • Channels: a way for goroutines to pass data safely to each other.
  • Standard library: includes networking, JSON handling and an HTTP server, which reduces the number of external packages a service needs.
  • Garbage collection: memory is reclaimed automatically, so developers do not free it by hand.

Why Go Is Used for APIs and Infrastructure

Go is widely used for APIs, microservices and command-line tools. Several well-known infrastructure programs, including container and orchestration software, are written in Go, which reflects its suitability for long-running network services.

For hosting, the appeal is operational simplicity. A service can be built for a target operating system and copied to a server as one file. Memory use is generally modest, and the service can sit behind a reverse proxy that handles encryption and public traffic. A Go API that receives JSON from a mobile app and reads a database is a typical example.

Frequently asked questions

Is Go Hard to Learn Compared With PHP or Python?

It depends on your background. Go has fewer language features than many languages, which keeps its syntax small. However, its static typing, explicit error handling and compile step require different habits from dynamic languages such as PHP or Python. Many developers find the language easier to use once they understand how types and interfaces work.

Does a Go Application Need a Runtime Installed on the Server?

Usually not. A compiled Go program includes the parts of the runtime it needs, so the server only needs a compatible operating system and processor architecture. This differs from PHP or Node.js, where the server must provide the interpreter or runtime that executes the application.

Is Go Used for Front-End Websites?

Go is mainly used on the server side. Behaviour in the browser is written with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Go can generate HTML pages on the server with its template package, or serve an API that a JavaScript front end consumes.
