Registrant Verification

What Registrant Verification Is and Why It Exists

Domain registrant verification is the process of confirming that the email address on a domain's registrant contact is valid and reachable. ICANN requires accredited registrars to carry it out when a domain is registered and whenever the registrant's email address changes.

Verification exists because registration data is only useful if it reaches a real person. An unreachable address means the owner cannot be told about expiry, disputes or requests for information, and a domain can be left unmanaged. The check is a basic accuracy measure. It confirms that the mailbox works, not the identity of the person behind it.

What Happens When the Verification Email Arrives

The registrar usually sends an email containing a link or a confirmation step. Completing it shows that the address can receive mail and that its owner acted on the request.

Because verification emails are a common target for scams, it helps to be cautious. A genuine message comes from your registrar and does not ask for your account password. Look at the sender and the address of any link before acting, and go to your registrar account directly if in doubt.

What Happens If the Email Is Never Verified

If the registrant does not verify the address within the time allowed, the registrar can suspend the domain. A suspended domain is usually taken out of service, so the website and sometimes the email linked to it can go offline. This is disruptive for a business, even though the name remains registered.

Verification is usually restored once the address is confirmed. Changing the registrant email triggers the same check again, so an old or shared address that is no longer monitored can cause problems later. Lock rules that may apply after a contact change are covered in domain locks.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the verification email not arrive?

The usual causes are a mistyped address, a mail filter that caught the message, or a mailbox that no longer exists. Check the spam or junk folder first, then confirm the address stored in your registrar account. If the email is still missing, ask your registrar to send it again.

Do I have to verify again every year?

Not usually. Verification is required at registration and after a change to the registrant email. Registrars are generally required to remind registrants once a year to keep their contact details accurate, and to follow up when details appear to be wrong.

Does verification prove who owns the domain?

No. It shows that someone can receive email at the address provided, not that the person is the legal owner or the right person to control the name. Ownership questions are a separate matter, covered in domain ownership.
