ISO 27001 for Hosting

What ISO 27001 Is and How It Works

ISO 27001 hosting refers to a provider whose operations are certified against ISO 27001, an international standard for an information security management system (ISMS), which is a documented set of processes a company uses to identify, manage and reduce risks to its information. In hosting, that information includes customer data, system configurations, access records and internal plans. A provider with ISO 27001 certification has had an independent auditor confirm that its system meets the standard.

The standard does not prescribe specific technologies. Instead, it asks the organization to define the scope of its security system, assess its risks, choose controls and show that those controls are reviewed and improved over time. An annex lists reference controls covering areas such as access control, supplier relationships, incident handling and physical security.

What Certification Means for a Hosting Customer

Certification is granted by an accredited certification body after an audit. The audit usually has two stages: a review of the documented system, followed by a check of how it works in practice. Certificates are normally valid for three years, with surveillance audits in between, so the status is re-checked regularly.

For a customer, the certificate shows that the provider follows a structured approach to security. It can help during vendor assessments, especially when a business needs evidence for its own compliance policies. The certificate applies only to the scope that was audited. A provider may certify its data center operations but not its customer support tools, so customers should check exactly what is covered.

The certificate also has limits. It does not guarantee that a provider will never suffer a breach, and it does not measure how well any single control performs. It describes the management system, not the security of each customer's website. Physical protection of the facility is a separate topic, covered in data center physical security.

ISO 27001 is often compared with SOC 2, another common assurance report, but the two differ in form. ISO 27001 is a certification awarded to an organization that meets a published standard. SOC 2 is an attestation report written by a CPA firm about a provider's controls against defined criteria. Customers may encounter both, and each answers a slightly different question.

Where customer data is stored is a related but separate question. Rules on location and jurisdiction are explained in data residency.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO 27001 certification the same as being secure?

No. ISO 27001 shows that a company runs a documented information security system that an accredited auditor has checked. It does not prove that the company has no weaknesses or that its systems will never be attacked. Customers should read the scope of the certificate and ask how controls such as access reviews and incident response are handled.

How long is an ISO 27001 certificate valid?

A certificate is normally valid for three years. During that period, the certification body carries out surveillance audits, usually once a year, to confirm the system is still operating. At the end of the cycle, a full recertification audit is needed. Customers should check the expiry date and scope printed on the certificate itself.
