Database Management

What Database Management Involves in a Control Panel

cPanel MySQL databases are storage areas for a website's data, such as posts, orders and user accounts, that the hosting control panel creates and manages for you. Database management is the panel work of creating those databases, creating the users who connect to them, and deciding what each user may do.

A database has three separate parts in the panel: the database itself, the database user who logs in to it, and the privileges that connect the two. Creating one does not create the others. Keeping them separate lets each site reach its own data without reaching anything else on the account.

Panels usually add a prefix taken from the account name. A database called blog on an account named shopowner may appear as shopowner_blog. The prefix keeps names unique on a shared server. Panel-wide concepts are covered in what a hosting control panel is.

How Privileges, Remote Access and Database Tools Work

Privileges are permissions such as reading rows, adding rows, changing table structures or deleting tables. Most applications need full rights on their own database and nothing on others. Panels often offer an all-privileges option, which is convenient but broader than a read-only tool needs.

Database users are also tied to the host they connect from. Applications on the same server normally connect to localhost. Remote access is a separate setting that lets a computer elsewhere connect to the database. It raises the risk of exposure, so it is usually limited to known addresses.

phpMyAdmin, a web tool for managing MySQL databases, gives a browser interface to the same data. It is handy for inspecting tables, but it is an extra login point. Installers that create databases automatically are covered in one-click installers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a database user in a hosting control panel?

A database user is a login name and password that an application uses to connect to a database. It is separate from the panel login and from email accounts. The privileges granted to the user decide what the application may do with the data. One database can have several users, and one user can be given access to several databases.

Why does my website say it cannot connect to the database?

The usual cause is a mismatch between the database name, user, password or host in the application's configuration file and the values the panel created. Because these are stored as separate items, one wrong value is enough to break the connection. Check that the user is assigned to the database with privileges, and that the host matches what the application expects.
