LiteSpeed Cache

What LiteSpeed Cache Is and How It Works

LiteSpeed Cache, often written LSCache, is a caching system built for the LiteSpeed Web Server and its open-source sibling, OpenLiteSpeed. It stores generated pages and other responses at the server level, so many requests can be answered before the application runs. A companion plugin for WordPress connects the site's publishing events to the cache.

Server-level caching differs from a caching plugin that runs entirely in PHP. A PHP plugin has to start the application to decide what to serve, which costs time on each request. A server-level cache can check its own store first, which is cheaper when the entry exists. The server and plugin are designed to work together, so cache rules and purges are coordinated across the stack.

Why It Differs From PHP-Only Caching Plugins

The underlying idea behind both is page caching. Many WordPress caching plugins write HTML files to disk and let the web server serve them for simple visits, but they still start PHP for other requests. Plugins that work only inside PHP are simpler to install, but PHP still runs on every visit. Plugins built for LiteSpeed can use the server's native cache, so cache hits can be served with fewer steps.

The effect on a given site depends on its setup and traffic. A small site with light traffic may see little difference. A busy site with many dynamic pages or heavy plugins may benefit more, since fewer requests reach PHP. The plugin also includes optimization features that are separate from caching itself.

Why Hosts Promote It and What to Check

Hosts that run LiteSpeed often highlight the cache as a built-in feature, because it can be enabled for customers without extra server work. Promotion can also reflect the host's own infrastructure choices, so the benefit for any one site is worth measuring.

A fair assessment asks several questions. Is the cache enabled for the site's plan? How does it interact with the site's theme and plugins? Does the host support the server-level features that make it faster? Promotional material can be useful information, but it does not replace measuring response times on the site itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does LiteSpeed Cache Only Work on LiteSpeed Servers?

Its full server-level features require a LiteSpeed server. On other web servers the plugin can still cache pages, but it relies more on PHP, so the speed gain is usually smaller. Site owners should check which features apply to their server before relying on them.

Is LiteSpeed Cache Better Than Other Caching Plugins?

There is no single answer. LiteSpeed Cache is strongest where a LiteSpeed server is in use, because the cache sits at the server level. Other plugins may suit other servers or simpler needs. The best choice depends on the server, how much personalization the site has and which features the owner needs. Testing with real traffic gives a clearer answer than rankings or marketing claims.
