What Is llms.txt

What llms.txt Is

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain Markdown file placed at the root of a website, at a path such as /llms.txt, that gives large language models a short, curated guide to the site. It lists the most important pages with brief descriptions, so an AI tool can find useful documentation without reading every page.

The idea came from a developer community rather than a standards body. It is not an official web standard, and not every AI company has said it will use the file.

What the File Contains and How It Differs From Other Files

The format asks for a title, a short summary and sections of links, each with a one-line description. A companion version, often called llms-full.txt, can hold the full text of key documents in a single file for models that can read large amounts of text at once.

  • robots.txt tells crawlers which paths they may or may not request. It controls access, not meaning.
  • XML sitemaps list the URLs you want search engines to find, with optional metadata. They are built for completeness, not for summarizing.
  • llms.txt is a curated, human-readable overview meant for AI tools that want to understand the site’s key material.

The three files can coexist. A site can use a sitemap for discovery, robots.txt for access rules and llms.txt for a short guide. For the access side, see whether to block AI crawlers with robots.txt.

Does Your Website Need One?

For most small business sites, an llms.txt file is optional. It helps most when a site has a large amount of technical documentation, product guides or a knowledge base that developers and AI tools need to read accurately. A brochure site with a handful of pages gains little from it. Owners who want to guide AI crawlers toward key material may find it more useful.

Adoption is uncertain. Many developer documentation sites have added the file, but major AI providers have not consistently confirmed that their crawlers or assistants read it. Creating one costs little, so some owners add it as a low-effort signal, but no effect on how AI tools describe your business is guaranteed.

Keep the file accurate. An outdated list that points to moved or removed pages is worse than none, because it gives tools broken references.

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls which automated programs may request pages, and it is widely supported. llms.txt is a content guide that suggests which pages matter and what they are about. It does not block access, so use robots.txt or server rules for that purpose.

Will llms.txt improve how AI tools mention my business?

There is no confirmed evidence that it does. An llms.txt file may help AI tools find your best material, but whether assistants use it when answering questions is not guaranteed. Clear, well-structured pages and an accurate sitemap remain the more reliable foundation for visibility.
