Fix the White Screen of Death

What You Need Before You Start

This guide shows you how to fix the WordPress white screen of death, the blank page that replaces your website. It is for owners and administrators who see no content, menus or error messages. Before you start, you need file access through your host's file manager or FTP, a way to edit the wp-config.php file and a recent backup in case a change needs reversing.

Steps to Fix a Blank WordPress Site

  1. Turn on error logging. In wp-config.php, set WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG to true, and WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY to false. The error is then written to a log file instead of being hidden, and visitors do not see it.
  2. Read the latest log entry. Open the debug.log file in the wp-content folder and find the most recent fatal error. It names the file and line that failed, which shows whether a plugin, a theme or a core file is responsible.
  3. Undo the most recent change. If the error names a plugin or theme, rename its folder inside wp-content/plugins or wp-content/themes. WordPress then deactivates it, and the site should reappear. Renaming it back later restores it.
  4. Check the PHP version and memory limit. Confirm that the server runs a PHP version your WordPress version and plugins support. If the log shows memory exhaustion, ask your host to raise the limit, or set define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M'); in wp-config.php where the host allows it. Server settings are covered in WordPress server requirements.
  5. Replace any damaged file. If a core, theme or plugin file is broken, reinstall that component from a trusted source or restore the file from your backup. Avoid replacing wp-config.php or your uploads unless the log shows a clear need.
  6. Re-enable and test one item at a time. Reactivate plugins and themes individually, checking the site after each one, so you can identify the cause. Update history is explained in core, plugin and theme updates.

Common Mistakes and When to Ask for Help

  • Editing live files without a backup. A typo in wp-config.php or a theme file can make the blank page worse.
  • Leaving debug settings on. Visible error messages can expose file paths to visitors.
  • Updating everything at once. Several changes at the same time make the cause harder to find.

Ask your host's support team for help if the log is empty, if the server itself reports errors, or if other sites on the same server are also blank, since the fault may lie outside WordPress.

Is a white screen of death always caused by a hacker?

Usually not. Most blank screens come from ordinary faults, such as a plugin conflict, a PHP incompatibility or a memory limit. A malicious change can also cause one, so a sudden blank page on a site with no recent changes deserves a security check.

Can I fix a blank WordPress admin area the same way?

Usually yes. The admin area also loads the active plugins and theme, so the same steps apply. If you cannot reach the admin, rename the plugin folders over FTP or your file manager to disable them, then log in and reactivate them one at a time.

Can the server or host cause a blank page?

Yes. A server that runs out of memory, uses a PHP version that is too old or is misconfigured can produce a blank page even when WordPress itself is healthy. Checking whether other sites on the same server are affected helps show whether the cause is the server or the site.
